Some of the best marriage advice is pretty ubiquitous – prioritize good communication, address issues instead of avoiding them. Other tips are less obvious, but just as impactful. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite underrated habits that add up to a stronger, more connected relationship.
1. Surprise each other in small ways.
You don’t need a big, elaborate gesture to make your spouse feel loved. Sometimes the smallest, most unexpected moments, like taking a chore off their plate before they ask, or sending an out-of-the-blue romantic text, can be the most meaningful. This post rounds up ten low-effort, high-impact ways to keep the spark alive.
2. Break the counterproductive communication habits.
You may not realize it, but you might be doing things that sneakily erode understanding between you and your spouse. This post digs into common habits, like planning your response or leaving things vague on purpose, and how to swap them out for better ones.
3. Know when to ask for a do-over.
Everyone fumbles a conversation with their spouse from time to time, whether it’s a sharp tone, defensive reaction, or a moment of poor listening. This post makes the case for hitting the reset button in real time instead of letting a minor misstep spiral into something bigger.
4. Add a marriage meeting into your routine.
A regular check-in isn’t just for talking through relationship issues, it can also be the glue that keeps the logistics of daily life from creating friction between you and your spouse. This post walks through how to set one up so it actually sticks, from choosing a cadence to keeping the conversation balanced.
5. Define your own celebration culture as a couple.
Every couple brings a different set of traditions and expectations into marriage around how (and how much) to celebrate milestones. Figuring out the unique ways this looks in your marriage strengthens your bond while creating the foundation for lifelong memories. This post encourages you to intentionally decide what your own celebration culture looks like, rather than defaulting to what either of you grew up with — or what looks good on social media.
6. Eliminate the sneaky third wheel.
Your phone might be quietly stealing opportunities for connection through the constant urge to scroll instead of being present. This post offers ways to set boundaries around phone use without it feeling like a super restrictive rule.
7. Link new habits to ones you already have.
Instead of trying to overhaul your whole routine at once, try linking one new relationship habit to something you already do every day — like sharing appreciation for each other right after you clean up from dinner. This “habit stacking” approach makes new marriage-strengthening habits easier to remember and much more likely to stick.
8. Sneak in connection in 10 minutes or less.
You don’t need an entire evening to feel close to your spouse. Some of the best connection happens in small overlooked pockets of time. This post rounds up quick, low-effort opportunities, like a mid-day video call, or a “remember when” prompt over morning coffee, that give you a chance to bond in a very short period of time.
When it comes to strengthening your marriage, we often think of the usual “headline” advice. However, there just might be something smaller that ends up being the missing piece in your relationship. Do you have an underrated habit that has strengthened your marriage? Let us know in the comments!
I love these! They so make a difference.
Thank you for these great ideas to keep marriages fresh!
Love these and I would add in prayer. Even a simple prayer together at night before sleep. But there is incredible statistics to show the value of praying together daily and how that reduces divorce rates down to 1% !
I totally agree! We do that as well.
